Radon Testing

Many people believe that it is unnecessary to have a home radon tested in Florida. So why is it mandatory in most of the State that each school, government office or government facility to have a Radon Test performed? Why is it that it is mandatory to have a Radon test performed through out most of Florida for any building used for the caring of children or the elderly?

Because Radon is present in many areas of Florida with Hillsborough County having one of the highest concentrations in the State. The radon test itself is fairly simple. You chose a room that is on the lowest level of the house that can be sealed for a total of 60 hours. The room is closed from any ventilation (air ducts closed, windows closed, door shut) for 12 hours prior to the test being performed. Two canisters (vials) are placed 30 inches above the floor for 48 hours and as long as no one moves or tampers with the sampling canister they will gather enough information to return a reliable test result.

If a high radon count is seen in the test results you will be advised to have remediation performed. Radon remediation is not very expensive and once performed will last for the life of the house unless any structural changes are made to the home.
